Recorded live at New York City’s legendary Village Gate, Byrd at the Gate captures guitarist Charlie Byrd in an intimate club setting at the height of his early-1960s prominence. Byrd’s distinctive combination of classical guitar technique, jazz improvisation, blues, and Brazilian influences made him one of the most recognizable guitarists of the period.
The core trio features Charlie Byrd on guitar, Keter Betts on bass, and Bill Reichenbach on drums, joined by Clark Terry on trumpet and Seldon Powell on tenor saxophone. The program moves effortlessly from standards and blues to Brazilian material, including “Shiny Stockings,” “More,” “Blues for Night People,” “Butter and Egg Man,” “Ela Me Deixou,” “Broadway,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “Some Other Spring,” and “Where Are the Hebrew Children?”
Recorded live on May 9 and 10, 1963, the album offers an excellent snapshot of Byrd’s club performances following the breakthrough success of his bossa nova recordings. The appearances by Clark Terry and Seldon Powell add another layer of interest for jazz collectors.
