Released in 1966, On Top captures The Four Tops during their dominant Holland-Dozier-Holland period at Motown. Following massive hits like “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” the group was at the height of the Detroit sound — dramatic lead vocals from Levi Stubbs, lush arrangements, and tight rhythm sections from the legendary Motown studio band.
Spanning two full sides, the album blends original Motown material with standout interpretations including:
- “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever”
- “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over)”
- “Michelle”
- “Matchmaker”
- “Bluesette”
The production is classic mid-60s Motown — polished yet emotionally intense, with Stubbs’ urgent vocal style front and center. While not as commercially explosive as some of their biggest singles albums, On Top is an essential deep-cut record for collectors building out a serious Four Tops or Motown section.
A strong mid-60s Detroit soul title from one of Motown’s most powerful vocal groups.
