A groove-rich jazz-funk session from celebrated guitarist Phil Upchurch, Free & Easy showcases the soulful, versatile playing that made Upchurch a sought-after guitarist and bassist for artists ranging from Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway to Quincy Jones and George Benson.

The album mixes originals with inspired interpretations, including the title track “Free & Easy,” “Groovin' Slow,” “People Make the World Go 'Round,” “Midnite Blue,” “Reunion,” John Coltrane's “Moment's Notice” and “She's Out of My Life.” Upchurch's guitar is joined by an excellent ensemble featuring Russ Ferrante on piano and electric piano, Eddie Harris on saxophone attachment, Harvey Mason on drums, Phil Upchurch Jr. on bass, and Ephraim Toro on percussion.

Produced by Esmond Edwards and recorded at Sage & Sound Studio in Los Angeles, Free & Easy is an excellent example of Upchurch's ability to bridge straight-ahead jazz musicianship with funk, soul and polished electric grooves.
