Steve Winwood – Talking Back to the Night

Talking Back to the Night is Steve Winwood’s third solo studio album. Following the success of Arc of a Diver, Winwood leaned heavily into the emerging synth-pop sound of the early ’80s, blending it with his soulful vocal delivery and pop-rock sensibilities. Recorded entirely at his Netherturkdonic Studios in Gloucestershire, the album is notable for being performed, produced, and engineered almost entirely by Winwood himself — from synth bass lines to drum machine programming.

The record features the original version of “Valerie,” later remixed into a major hit in 1987, as well as deep cuts like “Help Me Angel” and the atmospheric title track “Talking Back to the Night.” The album reached #28 on the US Billboard 200 and remains a fan favorite for its moody, neon-lit production and introspective songwriting.
