A spirited slice of traditional New Orleans jazz, Dixieland Clambake on Bourbon Street features trumpeter and bandleader Tony Almerico leading a lively ensemble through a program of Dixieland standards and blues. Almerico was a fixture of the New Orleans jazz scene, and this recording captures the loose, ensemble-driven style associated with the city's clubs and jam sessions.
The band includes Tony Almerico on trumpet, Red Camp on piano, Fred Neumann on trombone, Joe Loyacano on bass, Frank Federico on guitar, Charley Duke on drums, Tony Costa on clarinet, Nina Picone on tenor saxophone, Bubby Castigliola on trombone, and special guest Sam DeKemel on bugle.
Selections include “St. Louis Blues,” “That's A Plenty,” “Grey Bonnet,” “Tin Roof Blues,” “Farewell Blues,” “In a Little Spanish Town,” “Waffle Man,” “Indiana,” “Fidgety Feet” and “Swanee River.” The combination of classic repertoire, New Orleans musicians and an unusual featured bugle performance makes this an appealing example of the Dixieland revival era.
Issued by Rondo Records in stereophonic high fidelity, this is a great addition for collectors of New Orleans jazz, Dixieland and traditional jazz.
